Ajmal .......the name is synonymous with "the most excellent perfumery products " and has put Assam in the International picture of perfume industry.
In the Middle East today, Ajmal Perfumes is synonymous with captivating perfumes, beauty products and high-quality Arabic fragrances for the body and home. It all began when Ajmal Ali, a rice farmer from the Indian state of Assam, came to Bombay to try his luck as a trader in perfumes. With the rice crop frequently failing owing to the vagaries of monsoon rains, life was tough in Assam. The abundance of agarwood or oudh in his native Assam gave young Ajmal Ali the idea that he could perhaps make a living out of trading in this natural resource, the prime ingredient of all oriental perfumes. With 500 rupees and some oudh oil as his starting capital, he left his hometown for Bombay with high hopes and aspirations.
He turns supplier of Agarwood and Dahn Al Oudh, sourced from his home state of Assam. In 1951 he starts blending various kinds of fragrant oils, becomes manufacturer of fragrances. From 1951-1963 Ajmal Perfumes emerges as the premier supplier of fragrances to the Middle East. In 1976
Ajmal moves the company's operations to the Middle East and opens the first Ajmal outlet in Dubai. In that he launches its first "Mukhallat" (Arabic for concoction) fragrance. The success of the product prompts the company to launch several more such products.
Since shifting its operations base from Bombay to Dubai in 1976, Ajmal Perfumes has established over 200 exclusive retail outlets across the Arabian Gulf and hundreds of dealerships across the globe.
UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and India comprise the retail network. The global distribution network is spread across Pakistan, Russia, Iran, Syria, Maldives, Egypt, Turkey, Germany, Bulgaria, Sudan, Libya and Austria. The company has invested over $10 million in a new 150,000 square-foot facility in Dubai that offers a high-tech automated production unit including a state-of-the-art research wing. Ajmal Perfumes is also the only regional perfume manufacturer authorized to issue quality certificates on behalf of the Saudi Arabian Standards Organization, or SASO. They have also been awarded " Superbrand Status" by the Kuwait Superbrand Council.
In Kuwait, they have 20 showrooms. Yesterday I visited their Kuwait Magic Mall showroom where I met Ahmed Alauddin( the showroom manager) and Imdad from Assam. I was happy to know from them that out of around 5000 employees in Ajmal Perfumes 60% are from Assam.
